Chief Executive Officer

Geol. Mike Karanja is the Chief Executive Officer of the Geothermal Association of Kenya, a position he has held since March 2018. He is the Secretary to the GAK Board and all its committees and he is responsible for driving the Association’s progressive agenda.

He is a citizen of Kenya with eleven years of experience in the earth sciences across East Africa, and in this period, he has had six years in business leadership. Mike Karanja previously worked at management levels at a knowledge service company and at an Engineering company, both, based in Nairobi, Kenya.

His technical and managerial experiences cover the industry fields of groundwater, surface water, surface mining, oil & gas, geothermal, geotechnical works, and Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment where he pioneered several sectoral and community initiatives, working with the public, private sectors, and development agencies. He is an established Boardroom specialist and has an exceptional range of skills acquired over his career, in corporate governance, business development, and Board support.

He was a Board Member of the Kenya Water Industry Association and served in various committees at the Geological Society of Kenya where he is a Professional Member. He is a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science graduate from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He is an astute researcher, reporter, speaker, and moderator.

Administration and Finance Officer

Ms. Cynthia Rutto joined GAK in February 2020 as a Finance and Administration Officer. She has over 7 years of experience in the finance and accounting field. She also has a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from Egerton University and is a CPA-K Finalist. She is in charge of financial management, control, and administration. Cynthia is a passionate, resourceful, and results-driven individual.
